How Drone Technology Is Revolutionizing Tree Planting and Reforestation

A drone can be used for aerial photography of emergency response by law enforcement. The versatility of drones and their ability to fly are driving up their popularity. Drones are capable of amazing things. As an example, drones are soon going to be planting trees.

Drones Planting Trees

You read it right. DroneSeed, a company in Tampa, is responsible for drones that plant trees. The technology to allow drones to help in reforestation is still under development. However, the company intends to offer its services to state governments and landowners who have more than 10,000 acres.

Drones are a great way to help with reforestation

New technology will allow forestry agencies save millions of dollars on replanting trees. Replanting 300 million acres of forests lost in the last 20 years will cost approximately $100 billion. Drones would be much cheaper if they planted trees. One drone operator, according to the company can control 15 units at once. This is the equivalent of 360 man-hours. The average tree planter plants two acres of trees per day.

Drones, which can be fitted with software tailored to their needs, will be used for spraying agricultural products like herbicides or fertilizer and planting tree seeds. The drones also collect data in the field. Drones use air pressure to fire the seed capsule into ground. This is very similar to a paintball. Cool, right?

Federal Aviation Administration has approved DroneSeed’s application for agricultural spraying. DroneSeed hopes to be able grow plants soon. They want to work with commercial forestry companies to increase the efficiency of reforestation. This sounds fantastic, right?
